The Change is on A Review By Sally Hall, Human Life International 'The Change is On' is Metanoia Media's follow up to the award winning production 'Sowing in Tears', which was the winner of the 22nd International Catholic Film and Multimedia Festival held in Niepokalanów, Poland in May 2007.
Both productions document the response to HIV/AIDS in the dioceses of Tzaneen, which has implemented a multi faceted and authentically Catholic response, rooted in the Gospel of Life, to the scourge of HIV.
Over 2000 new infections take place every day in South Africa, despite attempts to saturate the culture with the message of 'safe sex'. These documentaries are therefore extremely relevant and shed light on how the Church is succeeding in tackling this epidemic, which has such tragic consequences and rips apart the very fabric of South African society.
'The Change is On' focuses specifically on the 'educational' and preventative aspect of the Diocese strategy to tackle HIV/AIDS . Bishop Hugh Slattery has broken new ground by implementing the "Education for Life' program, developed in Uganda by Catholic Religious, whose involvement in grassroots AIDS education brought them to the realisation that imparting information only, was not enough. The Education for Life Programme ismdesigned to change lives, to teach young people how to change their behaviour and that healthy, life-giving choices are within their reach.
The documentary also contains interviews with leaders involved with the Education for Life Programme in Uganda, who give an insight into how abstinence played a huge part in Uganda's HIV/AIDS campaign, which succeeded in drastically reducing infection rates. The Ugandan evidence is a testimony to the fact that if given enough support, abstinence can and does work.
The quality of the production is on par with Metanoia's previous award winning film. This sensitively made documentaryhighlights not only the truth and beauty of Catholic teaching on human sexuality, but shows that it's practical implementation is possible in an area ravaged by the pandemic.
